The Fifths lost heavily to St Margaretsbury IIIs on Saturday, after conceding over 200 runs and then the batting collapsing in reply.
Losing the toss and being asked to field, the Fifths bowled well in warm conditions and facing some decent batsmen for the opposition.
The score rose fairly rapidly, although there were various edges the just flew wide of the keeper and slips and mistimed shots that just cleared the outfielders.
Wickets were hard to prise out and it is credit to the young bowling attack that Knebworth eventually took seven in total – Jo Coulson taking three, and Ben Smith, Kyle Roomans. Conor Murrill and Jo Barnes taking one apiece. Pete Hoskin and Ben Smith also took a couple of fine catches but, unfortunately, the score carried on growing until the innings closed after 47 overs on 216-7.
Chasing down a total was always going to be tricky, but this was made even harder with the St Margaretsbury opening bowling – one of their openers usually playing in their Second team in Division 6 and the difference of dropping down five divisions was clear.
Only Joel Curtis and Caolan South reached double figures and Knebworth were bundled out for 50 after 24 overs – demonstrating that asking a Division 11 team to see off a Division 6 opening bowler really is an unrealistic task.
Next week the Fifths are playing Potters Bar IVs in what will hopefully be a more even contest.
