THE Firsts came down to earth with a squelch this week as they slithered to a 129-run defeat on a day the league programme was decimated by the weather.
Chasing an improbable 257 for victory at Flitwick, the Park were shot out for 128 all out in 35.5 overs, dashing hopes they could continue their great form from the opening weekend.
As our picture above shows, fielding conditions were less than perfect at the pretty Flitwick ground where Danny Digweed will be struggling to get his whites laundered in time for next week.
The Seconds’ and Fourths’ games were casualties of the overnight rain.
On the bottom pitch at the Park the Thirds made a start against Harpenden III before the weather intervened. They were 22-1 off 11 overs when one shower too many left the pitch too wet to continue.
Spare a thought for Dave Mantle’s Fifths who slogged all the way to Winchmore Hill for their opening league fixture against Northampton Exiles before the rain swept in and ended things. Youngsters Archie Stephens and Tom Orchard impressed as they steadied the ship following the loss of three early wickets, the Fifths finishing on 42 after 14 overs.
