Knebworth Park will learn the fate of its ambitious plans to move ground by the end of April, members were told this weekend.
The club’s proposals for three new pitches and a modern pavilion off Park Lane will be put before planners at North Herts District Council who will decide whether it can go ahead.
The £1million scheme has run into opposition from some Old Knebworth residents concerned about traffic and disturbance from the site.
But the club is confident it has come up with a winning project which will be an asset to the village and the wider cricketing community.
Chairman Chris Johnson said: ‘We genuinely believe the new ground will be a vast improvement on the outlook residents currently enjoy. The clubhouse will be tucked away almost out of view and there will be no more traffic in Old Knebworth as a whole than before.’
The plans follow years of negotiation with the owners of Knebworth House who feel they can put the current ground to greater commercial use.
They were submitted last month and have the backing of Sport England and other cricketing organisations.
Club members were able to get their first detailed look at the drawings at two specially convened sessions in the clubhouse this weekend.
Chris Johnson also explained the details of the planning process with the first tricky obstacle being gaining the support of the parish council at a meeting early next month.
He also urged members to register their support for the plan either by writing to North Herts District Council or by logging on to the council’s website.
However, time is of the essence as the formal period for public consultation ends on Thursday (February 27).
Chris said: ‘It was great to see so many members taking an interest in what is the most exciting development in its 140-year history. Now, we need the club’s hundreds of players, members, supporters and friends to send a clear message to the council why they too must get behind us.’
